Handing Business Card at Networking Event

Carly Rae Jepsen said it perfectly with her hit song, “Call Me Maybe,” this year. Whether you like the song or frankly can’t stand to hear it on the radio one more time, it does have a very important marketing message we can all learn from.

How many times have you been to a networking event only to find yourself holding several business cards at the end and not really knowing who they came from or why you have them? What message has that person given you? Exactly this, “Call Me Maybe.” What are the chances of you calling that person just because you have their business card in hand? Probably zero.

It’s simple, really. Be intentional when you hand out your business card. When you give someone your card, ask for theirs in return, but only if you have decided that you WILL contact them. Marketing is not passive. There is a purpose, a goal. Decide that in the new year you will stop with the “here’s my card, give me a call” approach. Get rid of the “maybes” and start sending the right message to those you meet.  Call them.

Keep it Disciplined!
